Whimsical Anapestic Tetrameter
Here I sit
in the rain;
thoughts run wild
through my brain.
I can’t sing,
I can’t dance,
so I write
in a trance.
Words are words,
balderdash,
say it loud,
say it fast.
Speak it soft,
speak it slow,
not the same,
don’t you know.
Now I’m done,
now I’m through,
here’s the end,
just for you.

Anapestic tetrameter: A poetic meter consisting of 12 syllables per line, in a form of two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed syllable. It is sometimes referred to as a “reverse dactyl”, and shares the rapid, driving pace of the dactyl.
Perfect rhythm. Balderdash, indeed.
Killer Ron — loved it! 🙂
Ha! It certainly works, right through to the end, which made me laugh.
Yes, I love this!
loved it…
I think the spirit of Dr. Seuss overtook you, such great fun!
You got the rhythm and feel of this one! It made me smile!
Quite lyrical!
You got right into the metre here and had a little fun, Ron – I enjoyed this!
I like the way you broke it down into short lines that tap out the metre like morse code and convey the wildness of those thoughts. Great rhyming too. These lines made me smile, mainly because of the word on its own – it’s one of my favourites:
‘Words are words,
balderdash,
say it loud,
say it fast.’
I enjoyed the steady stream of thoughts and the way you broke them up. The tetrameter was spot on! 🙂
We’re definitely on the same page here, OtherRon.
I can hear The Cat in the Hat as I read this. Then he does a soft shoe, then jumps up and clicks his heels. Delightful!
This was great fun, Ron. Balderdash and poppycock. I loved it!
You aced this … perfect form even better when read aloud .. in hopscotch.
You really got the pace right… and breaking it up in four lines really increased the pace.
