Half Of A 1798 African Conversation

‘Tis the spring of ’98, and our Africa safari is well under way
So far we find it a nice place to visit with no intent to stay

Nights in the jungle might be the blackest sky we’ll ever know
Except that night the supernova put on a spectacular show

We came in search of elephants but found oh so much more
Great savannas with lavender, acacia trees, and some wild boar

Giraffes that extended their necks clear into the wild blue yonder
And dinosaur bones were always nearby where ever we did wander

This is no place for the elderly or a child still carrying a teddy bear
Take a highlighter to these warnings, don’t take them as a dare

They say we need to hear the nightingale’s song, but it hasn’t happened yet
Although we’ve heard the screech of vultures, about as unpleasant as it gets

We’ve got a big day tomorrow viewing waterfalls that are among the best
We’ll finish this conversation in the morning, it’s time to get some rest
