It Rains For Us

Before
the rain arrived
as the new leaf withered
the Garden of Eden pleaded
“help us”

During
the quenching rains
the matcha grew stronger
soothing the dragon beast in all
of us

Throughout
the downpour, with
survival secured, we held
a grand black tie celebration
for us

After
the storm, the sun
emerged from half-and-half
seclusion, bestowing its grace
on us

  • CHANCE POETRY (also called aleatory poetry) Poetry written using chance methods, such as words written on cards and drawn at random to furnish an order for a poem’s vocabulary.
  • CINQUAIN (sing-kané; French, “group of five”) A poetic form, inspired by Japanese tanka, invented by Adelaide Crapsey (who wrote twenty-eight of them), with a syllabic arrangement of 2-4-6-8-2 in its five lines.
  • The Challenge: My challenge to you is to write seven cinquains in the 2-4-6-8-2 syllabic pattern, one for each of the paint chip words or phrases, used in the order in which they were drawn. Or if you’d like a little less strenuous challenge, write however many five-line stanzas you desire, but still using the “chance” words and phrases in order. The paint chip words and phrases you have to work with are before the rain, new leaf, Garden of Eden, matcha, dragon, black tie, and half-and-half.

    1. I believe this is the 2nd time you prompted us with the multiple cinquain structure – it is one that I enjoy.

I especially admired your close to this, Ron:

    “After
    the storm, the sun
    emerged from half-and-half
    seclusion, bestowing its grace
    on us’

Has a real authentic ring to it that cuts through and takes you to that moment.Great!
