Maggie May of Barcelona

Entranced I was by Maggie May
Educating me the Mediterranean way
How many before me I cannot say
Belonging to her this late September day

Her gracefulness beyond beguiling
Beneath Barcelona sun I’m smiling
Careening forward with water slicing
Billowing spinnaker provides the icing

——

We went sailing off the coast of Barcelona aboard the Maggie May in late September 2021.

I asked the captain how the sailboat got the name Maggie May. He replied, “the song of course.”

Maggie May was released in 1971 on the album Every Picture Tells a Story

  1. I hoped Maggie was analogy not literal, but your poem was fun. I don’t remember that form. Very creative to squeeze the prompt into a form. By the way, I do enjoy your participation over at my photography FB site.

    1. I was trying to make it sound like Maggie was a lover, but with a twist at the end, getting people to say “oh, he’s talking about a boat – not a woman” Not sure if I had enough runway in 44 words to accomplish that. And I enjoy your photog site.

    1. …and that is why there is not a picture of me. My “wind in the hair” photos leave a lot to be desired.

    1. Rhyming is not a choice for me — it comes naturally. I have to work hard to create a non-rhyming free-verse poem, and even then, one or two will sneak in.
