Turtle Hiding In A Shell

The turtle cautiously retracts as I approach
Thinking his security measure is beyond reproach
He patiently waits until danger subsides
Before venturing forth without reason to hide

In times of uncertainty I withdraw too
Often for reasons quite out of the blue
Deep into my shell, I pretend to hide
Instead of facing everything in stride

I know, like the turtle, I can still be seen
Somehow retreating is a protective screen
When comfort returns, signaling all is well
Just like that turtle, I’ll come out of my shell

  1. That was a lovely surprise, Ron! I do like turtles and have written about them myself. I love the rhyming couplets in this poem and the pace, which emulates the sped of a turtle. Yes, withdrawing like turtles into our shells – I do that too. A n excellent comparison.
