Contemplating My Navel – Flash Fiction
“Contemplating my navel” is my usual uttered response when questioned about the expressionless, zombie-like, blankness engulfing my face. Truth be known, I often don’t know what I’m thinking about, or if I’m even thinking at all. It’s really more of a meditative state, on a different plane of consciousness than what the process of thinking requires. I often drift away trying to understand my reason for being in this universe, the “why am I here” kind of thing. Although I keep contemplating questions that cannot be answered by mere mortals, I prefer keeping in mind even the possibility that existence has its own reason for being. In other words, perhaps my reason for being here is simply to be here. Trying to assign a deeper meaning beyond that falls into the realm of speculation. Who knows, maybe I am just contemplating my navel.

Simply to be here seems as good as reason as any. And thinking about nothing has its place, too! 😀
I like how you began and ended with the same words but they take on a new timber by the end.
Contemplating your navel is fine, just keep it lint free… 🙂
Very well written and Im sure strikes a chord with a lot of people. Of course, you do realise there are other service careers than the navy. 😉
LOL. I’ve heard that even the Air Force contemplates the Navy.
I’m totally into omphaloskepsis, Ron 😀
Right on!
Yours,
David
I never it knew it had a name. Thanks for the education.
Love this especially; “Although I keep contemplating questions that cannot be answered by mere mortals, I prefer keeping in mind even the possibility that existence has its own reason for being.” Yes! Gorgeously rendered! 🙂
Maybe we are better as humans if we just accept our being here for no particular reason… the world seems to go bad when we follow those with a clear purpose.
